Brussels Trip

The kids are off school for a while, so this week we packed the bags and took a short vacation to Brussels, Belgium, the capital of Europe (or so they say). We left Holland by bus on Monday, played in Brussels that evening, played all day Tuesday (and Wednesday morning), then came home Wednesday night. Below are some pictures and videos from the visit.

This is where we ate the first night: fish, chicken, etc.

Inside the Hotel Noga. Anna was scared of this guy at first.

Playing "Halli Galli" at the hotel. It's a new favorite game.
X
"Manneken Pis" (i.e. peeing boy). The most popular site in Brussels.

The kids at Manneken Pis. We visited two or three times.

Legend says that those who touch this statue will return to Brussels one day. I know it works because I touched it on my mission more than ten years ago. (And now I'm back.) The kids know it works because they touched it on our first day, then again on our second, then again on our third, etc.

That castle-ish thing in the background is called the Halle Poort. It used to be one of the entrances into Brussels, part of a large, defensive wall that surrounded the whole city. The wall and other gates are now gone, and today the Halle Poort is used as a museum. It was the kids' favorite stop on the whole trip.

Belgium is famous for its waffels. We had them for lunch on Day 2.

Eating mussels in Brussels

Kim hates seafood but insisted on eating a mussel so she could say that she ate "mussels in Brussels." Nifty rhyme. I pointed out after the first one, though, that unless she ate another she would have to say that she ate "a" mussel in Brussels, which doesn't have the same ring. So she was brave and had two. Buddy, Mary, and Anna also ate some.
